Old Characters

Just like it says on the tin: tell us about a old character that got you into the writing game. It might not be your first, but its one of the ones that helped you grow as a writer become the high functioning psychopath you are today.

[Amanda Rose]

My first in the SLA was Amanda Rose, from Avenger who had an unrequited crush on the Captain. I liked Rose because she was my reaction to the Betazoids being able to do anything: she was a counselor that relied on her experience in practice and not any supernatural abilities. I thought it was a unique insight into a Star Trek world where it felt like all the counselors were Betazoids because of their empathic abilities. Then there was Kelly Jean O'Connor. She was a hard nosed security woman that was tiny and had a temper like the fires of hell on a good day. And then, I think came my true break-through - Zuub. I think Zuub and Ba'zra Jennings were probably the two that kept me going. Everyone remembers Zuub. Heck, people outside of the SLA heard about Zuub. She was just such a unique character and something pre-Keth (at least as far as I knew ). Zuub was created in the days where there was not much canon regarding Andorians in a pre-ENT world. And, as I recall, prior to Zuub, nobody had ever seen anyone write/play an Andorian before. I will never forgive ENT not only for T'Pol but also what they did with Andorians. In any case, she's a character that I re-visit and wish I could write for her again someday.

I know that I wrote prior to my involvement in the SLA but not as much creatively and certainly nothing like what I found in the SLA. I'm too old to remember characters from pre-2003/4.

My first simming character was on a stargate sim. Zabrina McLeod.
I was terrible at writing sims, and I think I only stuck with that sim for a few storylines before getting sucked into others.
Liv Andronicus on Potemkin and, of course, Azaria on Dragon Squadron were my two longest running characters...

Relatively new to simming, my first character was Tarragon Hunter on a Firefly-based sim called The Monarch. The understated background character that was supposed to be a guest... do some cooking and then fade into the background. Um... yeah. Still working on stories with her... she simply has far too much more to say... daily. lol

Then I joined Dragon Squadron as Kaj Wendo; while everyone was going for pilots, I wanted to be a ground pounder... because it seemed to be a pivotal place to start. Sjet was writing Nabaal at the time, and lucasauseums was the Host, Ali was the co-Host. Epic meeting indeed. Torchwood 10, I wrote as Punkin Thomas, energy whore, literally, who had stormed into the sim with a captivating and charismatic entrance... and almost every single sim that there was on the SLA. A Minbari Doctor who enjoyed bubblegum and roller skates on Babylon 5, a half-Nausican who got involved with a Cardassian on Starbase 27... Loads of ideas, lots of characters, and stories aplenty. Like the Lays Chips commercial, I couldn't write just one. I co-hosted, and hosted, wrote, created, and enjoyed every moment. And still am... hence me being here.

Jake Sjet: My very first character. A young Martian orphan whose father died at Wolf 359, who became a doctor. This character got retold a few times, from wanting to serve in Starfleet to wanting nothing to do with it. He also has the record of dying the most amount of times because I made him turn Blue. Yeah thats a long story,

The Construct: Even longer story.

Dr Arron Santra: Bajoran war criminal who sided with the Cardassians, lots of medical experimentation but always spurned on by the loss of his wife due to the religious teachings of the Bajoran faith. In later incarnations I used Santra as a ethics dilemma for right to life and religious freedom, but in his early day he was a heat sink for a lot of emo writing I did. Woe is me, and so on.

Keth Soban: KETH SOBAN!!!
Serina Soban: KETH SOBAN WITH BOOBIES!!!! (Really, what more do I need to put here?)

Soto Nabaal: Gruff no nonsense combat leader of the Shades, the commandos who followed Dragon Squadron around trying t prove that just cause somethings blown up doesn't mean it can be more blown up. He literally aged twenty years in a single plot, as he began as a young Lt and ended within the same plot as a grizzled war vet and a Lt Colonel. War: its hell on the skin.

Jason Manaan: This man never made it onto the SLA, but I mention him because he was down right fun to play. He was called Mad Manaan because he had a tendency to break things...and people. The product of an Alliance genetics program to make cloned soldiers, he was a killer who tried to make a family and went crazy doing it. I keep getting ideas for him every now and then: always involving bicycles chains and can openers, the punch kind.

Benjamin Ingram: The man with the ego that refused to collapse down into a black hole. He's a genius and someone told that truth to his face, and he never forgot. Opinionated, arrogant, forgetful (Okanu? Okulalaw? His ex wife had a name that sounded like that I'm sure...) he was a utter rip off of Rodney McKay from Stargate Atlantis. I'll bring him back on day, who knows maybe even as a CO character: wouldn't that be fun?

Arkady Sjet: Stronk Russian. Built of Stalin Wood and powered by Socialism. Sworn enemy of good times and Western Capitalism. A grade A party pooper.

John Smith/Merlin: Simply put, the Devil. (And I love him to bit as a character, but he needs his own TV show)

Ferret: Badger's younger, less attractive cousin who stayed on Londinium. I wrote the character as a joke and by golly I had a lot of fun with that accent.

John Doe: The oddly soft spoken Haldoran from Babylon 5 sim Trinidad, always made out to be a bigger thing than he was but he'd be your friend for life if you just hello to him. A very simple black and white character that never got over being run down by a Minbari on roller skates.

I had a few other fun ppl... Jai and Regan from the old Horizon... Rhoannan Orr on SGA:3, hmmm... a Bajoran named Av Dalen Maarika on Ark Royal, an ex-Alliance scientists on Monarch, hmmm... looks like I've had a few characters on Monarch...

I even found some old artwork...Its really terrible because it was all done in 'paint' ..
