A darkened corridor in front of him. Empty beds strewn around the corridor. Broken glass. White curtains half draped over ancient machines. But very little dust to speak of, since this was a space station in...well... space. Not much dust in space, especially in a Star Base that was kept spick and span until the very last moment of abandonment. Very unlike Cardassia, where anything would be covered in a layer of dust within a matter of hours. It was a testimony to Cardassian cleanliness that everything was always kept as shiny and clean as possible, from the richest mansion to the poorest hut.

Perhaps that was the worst thing after the defeat: the dirt and the dust everywhere. With everyone dead or broken the dust had quickly reconquered its lost territory. It's dogged that does it. And the Cardassian deserts never ceased to blow their dust into cities and homes. A silent persevering enemy, right at every Cardassian's doorstep.

Lukat carefully checked every corner as he tread forward, the senses that were honed at the Bamarran Institute made sure he sensed every crack, every whisper, the slightest displacement of air... Then he heard him, and them. It seemed the Engineer, who was obviously delirious, had surprised the Starfleet Officers (again he wondered why...weren't they trained officers?). Senses primed he moved in towards where the showdown was taking place.

No one ever heard him, or even saw him. All eyes were on the wayward engineer. The others were trying to talk sense into a senseless man. Whatever was wrong with him, a mind as unpredictable as that could not be negotiated with. Lukat's weapon was defunct, so if he wanted to neutralise the man he'd have to get close. Lukat slowly approached from behind, as silent as ever. If the others were smart they would not give away his advance and remain intent on talking to the engineer.

Step by step Lukat got closer, allowing him to inspect his target for any hidden weapons or explosives. He couldn't discern any. He took a step closer, and then in one swift movement grabbed the engineer and pushed him down, pinning him to the floor and holding him there, unable to move.

"Do not struggle, my poor fellow", Lukat said in a soft yet commanding manner, "the only voice you need to worry about right now is mine."
