History:
Alison O’Brien was the youngest of two children born to staunch Irishman Connor O’Brien and his lovely wife Katherine. Although they were very poor (with her mother being a stay-at-home mother and her father being a grocery manager for Jewel), the family made the best of things and was overall very happy. Her early childhood was filled with games, laughter and love. Allison adored and looked up to her older brother, James, and did everything she could to be as much like him as possible.
When Allison was 9, her father and mother decided to take the kids to Six Flags as a reward for good grades and because they really hadn’t ever gotten to do much special as a family. Her father found out at the last minute he was going to have to work but her mother decided to forge on and take the kids, anyhow, seeing as they were looking so forward to it. They dropped Connor off at work but, unfortunately, would never make it to the amusement park. A driver in a large SUV fell asleep on Riverside Drive and went over the center line, plowing into the family’s Metro, killing Katherine and James instantly. Allie was luckier, emerging with only a large cut on her face and a badly broken arm. The emotional scars were much, much worse. The family did receive a modest settlement from the SUV driver’s insurance but it was barely enough to pay for the funerals and Allie‘s medical expenses.
The next few years were extremely difficult. Healing from her physical wounds as well as adjusting to her father being Allie’s only remaining family was almost too much. And it was almost too much for her father, as well. When Allison was 11, he decided to take a job as a Night Store Manager in Grand Rapids, MI to get away from Chicago and all the haunting memories it held.
Allie thrived in Michigan. She made a few good friends and did well in school. So well that she was invited to be part of a summer school program at the local zoo, John Ball. That was Allison’s best summer ever although also one of the oddest. She had always found herself having a natural affinity for animals (although she had never had one) but, being exposed to them all day, she found she could not only feel how the individual animals were on any given day but could also hear them from time to time. And she quickly discovered they could hear her, too… Knowing this was not “normal”, Allison kept this to herself. She quietly tried her new found “powers” on animals outside the zoo and discovered that whatever was going on with her, it applied to all mammals.
Her few good friends faded into the woodwork as Allie became closer and closer to the local strays until the girl found herself with only one real human friend, Christy, left. One evening the mice in the school showed Allie images of Christy being attacked in the school gym. In a panic for her friend, Allie ran as fast as she could to the school, calling for her animal friends to help a human in need. When Allison got to the school there were several dogs, cats, rats, raccoons and possums waiting for her to open the doors to the school. Once the doors were opened, they all ran in with the girl and together they attacked the man who had been hurting Christy. Allison herself even got in a few good punches, having been taught by her father that any Irishman (or woman) worth their salt knew how to throw a good punch. When the police showed up, the man was down and covered in the bites and scratches of several animals. Christy, who had lost consciousness, was able to corroborate Allison’s story of being attacked (although she had no idea how Allison knew) but neither girl could explain the man’s wounds. The police decided to chalk up the man’s damages to Allison’s punches. Although she wasn’t in any trouble with the police, seeing as she was defending someone from an attacker, the man turned out to be the school’s principal who was well respected man in the community. His standing in the community led to no one believing he was truly attacking Allie’s friend and he kept his position at the school. And prompt expelled Allie for at least the first few months of the next school year.
Offered a promotion of Store Manager with Meijer in the town of Neptune, Allison’s father decided this would be an ideal time to take it. Plus, the pay raise would be good enough they could finally afford a nice house. They moved there shortly before the school year was about to begin…
