Kat's mouth opened, and then shut abruptly. She had been addressed the Lieutenant and somehow inadvertently interrupted the Captain. Her cheeks flushed slightly with the error, and directed her gaze down to her PADD once more. The meeting wasn't yet over, and it seemed that there were more action items to be addressed. And there was a need for her to work with the XO as well.

She kept her head down, making notes, and left her internal ponderings to be addressed another time, because it seemed that she'd be working with a few individuals to make sure the ship was operating at as peak an efficiency as could be expected. She wondered how long the Starfleet command structure would last so far from home... Why had she used such a word when describing Earth? Hadn't the Horizon been her home for over a year now?

Her mind wandered for a moment, and she had to pinch the webbing on her hand between her thumb and forefinger, just to refocus herself. These were valid concerns but they had no place in the meeting hall. Kat took a breath, cleared her mind, and pushed her concerns aside until she had the ability to explore them without drifting from the priorities of the ship or the Captain.

Confirming the meeting between the Doctor and the Captain allowed her to reassert her presence in the present, and she sent the approval request to the Captain for the final okay, as she began drawing up tentative meetings between other staff members; herself included. Lieutenant Devlin, Acting Chief of Security, and Commander Wells, XO. She took a deep breath, multitasking as she managed to listen and write, redirect, and comment before finally closing one document, and opening another. She hoped that everything she wrote, observed, added, and coordinated between official submitted logs and her own notes would give the Captain the best possible view of everything.

All of that meant to keep her focused, and in the background as she stepped back once more, despite her growing action list and involvement in... other responsibilities...

Commander Mary Wells
Executive Officer

Mary listened to Gary's words then once he was done looked at Kat. "Let's pull up the ship roster and begin researching who can do what beyond their normal job. We'll need to set up interviews. Look for indications of anything such as hobbies that may benefit our current situation." She paused to think. "Emphasis on hidden science skills and survival training."

"Yes, Commander," Kat responded and looked around the conference room. "Once this meeting has wrapped up then should we stay here and begin the research?" It wasn't a difficult task, but it could be daunting, although there were fewer people on board after they went through the anomaly, as the Doctor was quite determined to point out, even without saying a thing. His actions spoke volumes... and perhaps that was what Kat noticed the most about him.

And wherever they were to begin... Kat figured that was going to be the Command Centre of sorts for this project the Captain had organised for them. It was indeed a necessity, but how it was going to proceed... that was the challenge. Looking at Lieutenant Devlin, Kat smiled again.

"Acting Chief," she said easily, without being patronising, "We'll also need to set up a meeting time to discuss the Captain's request. Please let me know when that would be best for your schedule, Lieutenant." Her fingers hovered over her PADD, waiting to take more notes and direct the timing as needed.

Talia blinked a little and looked up from her monitoring. After all, they had been speaking about practical things, and all she had to add was some not so amazing news. What would the Comms Officer have to add, truly? Minor anomaly readings she had already provided to Science, a few stray signals that had yet to be analysed, and some random noise that also required some analysis. But strange slience with an air of finality coming from the Anomaly they had been pulled through.

Whatever the Captain required, it would be an interesting conversation; probably centering around the announcement he was going to make. Shipwide communication most likely, and that would take some finesse. "Of course, Sir," she responded a bit absent-mindedly and stood. "Where would it be most convenient?"

Commander Mary Wells
Executive Officer

It was hard not to hear the challenge to Gary's authority. Under normal circumstances, Mary would have slammed the door on it hard, but what the doctor had put forth were legitimate and important moral and ethical concerns. Mixed with what was needed for survival, they very well might be something to disect and redefine as resources dwindled and time was against them. There was currently no habitable planet in the area. Deep scans would need to be made once the ship was repaired. That was a job for engineering while Kat and herself compared crew records. The computer would be doing most of the work, but a machine could not define what was truly important..mainly the will to survive. Projections based on physical talents and abilities could be made, but it was that will to go on that would supersede and actually supplant any machine speculations and data.

"Bridge, this is the XO. Proceed at once with deep scans and a complete 360 degree check for any possible habitable worlds." Wells began to make some notes. "Computer, bring up ship's roster. Tie into my station and that of the Captain's yeoman. Cross reference anyone with skills in the following areas. Wilderness survival, planetary survey, and wormhole therory." Maybe Gary had decided to set up shop here, but the XO hadn't given up hope of reversing what had put them here..

Kat's eyes widened only slightly at the not so subtle implications of the Doctor's words. 'Toe the line, kiptin, or I'll show you how much my right people can fuck you over.' With a smile that could rival even the gentlest of souls. How interesting he could be when dripping acidic words from a position that he felt was superior. Everything about him was patronising, which he had managed to curb thus far when dealing with her. How quickly that would change... as quickly as it did as the gloves came off in the briefing room. Ensign Flowers' response was all but lost in the face of the Doctor's veiled threats and potential challenge.

How did the Doctor figure that this was a good way to provide solidarity to the crew? How did this provide anything but division just at the time that they needed to come together? Did Dr. Sjet figure he was better suited to be the leader? A role she could see him shouldering with a mixture of fear, threat of bodily harm, and of course, the ever popular method of withholding his skills. Because sooner or later everyone would require something from him... everyone's body was being subjected to the same stresses, and the same threats of radiation. Perhaps this whole power struggle would indeed be moot.

Selfish. Self-serving. All under the guise of a medical man whose whole reason for being here was to ensure the continued life, health and well-being of the crew. Could he not see that this was detrimental? Even in the long-term? But she kept her counsel, and kept her wits about her, noting reactions to the statements, which may have been made specifically to test the waters. Her face remained impassive as she watched Commander Wells leave the challenge unanswered on the Captain's behalf, and instead go on with her previous orders. No one had yet to stand up for him, except himself.

It was a lonely place to be.

Her notes were copious and detailed; her personal observations interspersed with subjectivity, balancing the two as she realised that she would be required to work with the whole Command Staff. Closely. Perhaps Kat was in the best place of the Horizon. Or the most precarious. Only time would tell. She was about to say something when Ensign Flowers spoke up.

"Commander," Talia said, her clear voice carrying as though she were in a lecture hall. "Let me save you at least one file for research; I have wilderness survival skills as well as extensive experience in the field." She had almost added 'back home', but that was implied, wasn't it? No need to clutter up her meaning with extraneous verbiage. She could do that quite easily inside of her own head. "And the ability to understand the majority of languages that are based on similar communication styles quite readily. Although there is no guarantee that those would exist here in this system." So, a potentially useful skill as well. But where was it said that anywhere in life there were guarantees?

Turning her attention back to the Captain and the exchange between him and the CMO, Talia assessed Dr. Arkady Sjet. He wasn't a tall man, but he didn't need to be to appear both imposing and commanding. His personality spoke volumes in his demeanour, and the words he chose NOT to say. She wasn't sure if she admired him, but it might have been more like someone who admired a pit adder for its deadliness, and efficiency in dispatching others. She didn't feel threatened in the slightest; but those on the outside looking in rarely did. Her sense of survival was keen; she hadn't inspired his interest, or even felt him look at her. There was still time, but his vitriol and attention was squarely on the 'kiptin'. And despite their distance from their home planet, and the relatively impossibility of them ever returning, she still said to herself, 'This is going to be an interesting trip."
