History

Washed out of Starfleet academy in third year, shortly after changing her last name to something pronounceable, Jai was recruited to join Deep Core mining. Worked to chart the belt and scan for minerals on contract.
Jai was very nearly killed after a trigger happy miner thought she was jumping his claim and blew up the small asteroid she was conducting an EVA on. She survived and was able to regain full function of her limbs, thanks to a nearby Starfleet ship which heard her distress call and came to her rescue [and to a certain Martian medic]. Before she was able to get back at her assailant, her plans for revenge were sidelined when Starfleet called in their favour and she found herself in the service.
Due to her [incomplete] starfleet training, Jai climbed the ranks quickly, finishing the war as a Petty Officer 2nd Class.
At the end of the war she debated going back to civilian life, but found that she knew no one anymore outside of the service, and so she stayed.

While a damn fine engineer, Jai is a terrible administrator. She prefers to get her hands dirty than to stand back and watch others doing the grunt work.
Due to that, among other reasons, Jai has either been passed up for or turned down offers of promotion. Rather than deal with her, Jai's career manager found the longest deployment he could find and stuck her on it.
