The bone saw came free of his hands, and merrily sailed through the air on a ballistic trajectory...

Phil side-stepped in front of Cindy...

...that saw it skewer a life signs monitor hanging from the wall.

Phil closed his eyes for a moment savouring the whole being-alive and without any extra metal interfering with that then. feeling the Captain's eyes boring into the back of his skull, resumed his previous position.

“Excuse me...” he murmured.

+++++

Cindy did not know whether to laugh or to run at the Huanni's carelessness, never mind the fact that he was insulting her genre of science. And did the Huanni say that he wanted to waste time? Certainly that was not what he meant, was it?

Cindy's eyes started to darken from green to a light hazel as she addressed the Ensign. "Mr. Soban," she started. "I would thank you to not be so careless with your instruments. We have five years out in deep space and we are going to have limited resources. Therefore, we can ill afford unnecessary repairs. Thankfully this was not serious as we are still at the dock but I hope you will remember to be more careful."

She then looked over at Phil and said, "Can you have engineering take care of this accident?"

He strolled over to the comm panel.

“Wilson to Engineering. We appear to need a replacement diagnostic panel in Sickbay... You might need to check the associated circuitry as well.”

The Hua... Ensign... was showing his fangs. Please let that be a smile. Please. Dear God, this making friends thing is going to take work... And now he was playing with tenses. Such a bundle of contradictions. Good grief – was that future pluperfect he'd used?

Phil knew how to conjugate it in a number of languages, but it was rather rare to hear it used in context.

“Oh, wait that reminds me.” Keth turned his attention to Phil, that grin on his face again as he wagged a finger at him. “Did it hurt when they took your leg off?”

Phil rocked for a moment, as if Soban had literally pushed him.

I can do this. I can. I have to...

“Actually,” he smiled back, “the initial damage hurt significantly, but I was thankfully completely anesthetized when they removed what was left. But we can go over that in more detail next time I'm due in for my physical, can't we.”

When he'll actually have to touch me. I may need a little longer to psyche myself up for that...

“Well, it's been... interesting... to meet you,” Phil nodded to Nurse Greenberg, “both... but I'm afraid we're needed in the bridge. Captain?”

Cindy's eyes darkened a bit more, the green becoming a mere shadow of what it was in response to Soban's questioning Phil about his leg. She gathered herself by tugging at her dress jacket before continuing. "I have seen your record, Mr. Soban. I personally requested your transfer here because I believe that you have a lot to offer. I hope that you will prove that my instincts were right on this. I would hate to see your unique insights not completely utilized."

tag – Keth

She turned to Phil and said, "Yes, it is time to inspect the bridge." Her eyes started to lighten a bit at the prospect of seeing her bridge shortly. "Good luck, Mr. Soban." With that, she turned on her heels and headed towards the turbolift to the bridge.

“Ah excellent to hear Commander, excellent to hear!” Soban said, with that same infectious enthusiasm that only the cackling madmen of an Absinthe binge could appreciate. He placed a large hand on their shoulders and led them to the turbo lift “And Captain I assure you that you will not live to regret your decision as choosing me as then primary care physician aboard your ship. And Commander, I look forward to seeing you again soon concerning your ongoing physical therapy sessions. I have no doubt we’ll have you hopping about like a kit two malting’s from the mating season in no time!”

He again grinned toothily as the doors began to scissor closed on the pair.

“Oh Commander! Remind me to tell you about my relativistic pain theory! It really is quite revolutionary!” Keth called as the doors closed. Keth wasn’t sure that Phil had quite grasped the meaning of his statement, but the look of terror induced confusion was surely a case of not grasping the idea Keth had stumbled upon whilst stubbing his toe.

Still, they had five years together as a crew: plenty of time to test out theories and iron out any problem factors. Besides, if worse came to the worse, Phil had another leg and would surely be up for progressing medical science by any means necessary. Maybe he’d bring the subject up during the man’s physical? He turned back around and admired his sickbay, as with a final groan of tormented metal the life signs monitor came free of the wall and fell to the floor with a clatter.

“I think that went well.” Keth said gamely as Nurse Greenberg just stared in awe.

Of what, we may never know.

“Wilson to Engineering. We appear to need a replacement diagnostic panel in Sickbay... You might need to check the associated circuitry as well.”

It had been a well-deserved sonic shower. Nav's damp hair clung to her shoulders in tendrils, and she padded to the monitor buzzing in her quarters. They had relieved her, hadn't they? "Ensign Khangura," she said pressing the button.

She heard the standard greeting from the Chief and rolled right into his speech. "I know you're off duty, but a situation has come up in Sickbay."

"Situation, Sir?"

He coughed delicately. "The Commander requires your presence to replace a diagnostic panel and ensure that it and associated circuitry are in good working order."

"I'll just get my uniform on and be on my way, Sir." She was in too much of a hurry to hear a louder cough as the Chief inhaled his coffee. "Khangura out."

Putting her hair up, she slipped on her uniform, one that was tidier and more presentable. Nav was hopeful that she wouldn't have to go through too many of them, especially before they left Earth, but with her luck? That was going to be a toss up.

On her way out the door of her quarters, she grabbed the handles of her tool kits, using the long strap of one to hook over her shoulder, while the other she held tightly in her hand. This call sounded serious, and if the Commander was asking...

But what could have happened to the monitor? Had someone been a little upset with their check up? She went over the specs in her head, and thought how robust they had made these items. Swinging by Sickbay, she picked up the spare parts.

Heavily laden, she wracked her brains about what might have happened as she double timed it to Sickbay.

Interesting... This ship was like a puzzle. Different pieces glued together making a perfect fit. For all its shortcomings, one had to admire Starfleet ingenuity. Luke hoped that all the pieces had been sufficiently welded together. It would be counterproductive for the ship to fall apart at the seams. "Better not hit anything on the way out", Luke murmered.

He found his quarters easily enough. His things had already been transported in. He threw the padd containing his transfer orders on the table, and sat down on his bunk. For a moment he closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh. He felt a headache coming up, and rubbed his temples a bit. For a while he just sat there, gathering his thoughts. He thought about his parents, his nephews and little niece. "They'll be between 8 and 5 when I return..." Luke thought. He'd miss seeing them grow up.

He heaved another sigh. Well, nothing to be done about that now. It was no use to sit here feeling sorry for himself. So he got himself up and straightened himself, relieving all the build-up stress. He started off towards the Bridge.

Let's get this show on the road...

The Bridge. TK had no idea why he had come here. Perhaps a subconscious desire to see the place he'd be spending the majority of his sentence. The tactical station was unmanned, as he expected, so he wandered over to take a look.

His first impression was not a good one. As he pressed various buttons to test a few commands his frown deepened.

"What brain-dead code-monkey programmed this console? I've played video games with more practical configurations!" He growled. It was going to be a long mission.

As they arrived at the turbolift, the door slid open obediently. They entered, not exchanging a word until the door closed.

And Phil dissolved in giggles.

“Good luck? Really? Good luck...? Good luck settling in, good luck managing not to kill anyone, or good luck not provoking someone into killing him?!?”

Tag – Cindy

Phil wiped a tear from his eye, tugging his tunic straight and summoning his composure. By the time the turbolift arrived at the bridge, he was entirely business again. As Cindy walked through the door, he stepped out, snapped to attention and boomed...

“Captain on the Bridge.”

“Good luck? Really? Good luck...? Good luck settling in, good luck managing not to kill anyone, or good luck not provoking someone into killing him?!?”

Cindy gave Phil a look of annoyance but behind it, a bit of the sparkling green eyes were starting to return. "Seems that my own little prank on you backfired. But, yes, I think we're all going to need a bit of good luck with Ensign Soban. Honestly, Phil, are you going to prevent me from getting to know anyone? I can't and won't be a stuffy, aloof Captain."

“Captain on the Bridge.”

Cindy sighed, giving Phil a despondent glance. It faded as she saw the Captain's chair, her eyes returning to their green luster. She quickly and excitedly told the crew, "At ease, everyone!" Cindy practically floated to the Captain's chair and complained to anyone who cared, "It really is a shame that I have to stay in this uncomfortable dress uniform for the ceremony and then for the public to see us leaving. God, I can't wait to feel this chair in a real uniform."

She looked back at Phil and said, "Let me guess, Phil, er, Commander Wilson, you prefer the dress uniform...." She grinned widely at Phil, her eyes now positively sparkling.

She looked over the assembled bridge crew and said, "Come on now, ladies and gentlemen. Let's not be shy. Let's have introductions. Who will be first?"

Marian wandered through the halls, following her feet to her destination.
Thankfully she had been up to LEGACY plenty of times over the past year and had more or less memorized the layout of the ship in its massive entirety, while painstakingly documenting the completion of this first ship of her class, because with all the extra crew, contractors, observers, etc, the halls were a roiling mass of confusion.

She kept the camera built into her glasses recording as she wove her way through the crowded passageways, this would be good filler should she need it for her project, plus the Brass always likes to see bright, shining faces hustling about before a big event. Hopefully the cabin she had been assigned next to sickbay would be quiet enough for her to do her video and audio editing in relative peace, though having caught a glimpse of the Huani medic as he was escorted onboard led her to seriously doubt it. She had read up on him, and he was known for... exuberance.

She sighed and turned off the recording device. She'd arrived at her destination: The Bridge.

Keeping with tradition, the Captain would likely be inside and christening the Chair with its first butt indent.
Perhaps an event the civilian populace would like to see, but not one that should be shared. Marian knew well the fondness Commanding Officers had with the trappings of office - most specifically THE CHAIR.

Marian grinned, checked over her uniform one last time, then stepped through those swooshy doors onto the Bridge, just in time to see the Captain practically hover across the bright and shiny workspace to her chair and put the room to ease.

"Come on now, ladies and gentlemen. Let's not be shy. Let's have introductions. Who will be first?"

Marian debated whether or not to turn on her recording device back on... the public would love that 'first sit'... and this Captain was tagged as enjoying the spotlight - frak it. If Jackson didn't want this moment made public, no problem. Better to have the footage and not need it than to be reamed out for not.
She keyed the controls on her specially made ring and began recording the scene as crew began coming forwards to identify themselves. She could wait a bit before making her presence known.

"Captain on the bridge"

The young ensign snapped stiffly to attention. His face radiant, he could barely conceal his infatuation with his circumstances. One minute, familiarizing himself with the navigation panel which would be his routine assignment and now the words he'd dreamed about since he was a shiny schoolboy.

Here he was, on his first posting... and not just any starship. No! But one, it seemed, that was cobbled together just for him. Already he loved every little historic piece. His father, Admiral (semi-retired now as his mother always pointed out), had not been too happy with this placement but the ensign knew, just knew, that this was where his destiny lay.

Today was the beginning of the rest of his life.

He straightened the bottom of his uniform jacket and waited expectantly but the brass just trotted right past him. Sheesh! What was he? Invisible?

Buttons.
The helm-console was riddled with them. The trick was to press each one in such an order that didn't make him accidentally kill everyone on the ship by flying into a supernova or some such. Luke might sneeze and unintentionally launch the ship into warp, hit Earth, killing everyone on the ship and a whole bunch of unlucky people somewhere on the planet. Luke had personally seen the disaster of the USS Vengeance crashing into San Francisco, imagine that happening with a ship at warp.

But no pressure, besides, there were safeties for these sort of things. Also, he was a well-trained and experienced helmsman. That should count for something.

Yes. Luke felt pretty confident about that last part. Yes. Yes he did.

He looked around, saw an over-enthusiastic young Ensign, an angry looking man at Tactical and a suspicious-looking woman with glasses (who wore glasses in this day and age?). Their gaze met briefly, Luke suddenly felt very naked.

Tag Marian

The turbolift doors opened, which gave Luke the excuse to quickly look away. Two important looking people stepped out, an old man and a young woman. The young woman looked stunning.

The grumpy old man yelled:
“Captain on the Bridge.”

Ah. Luke had actually never bothered to check up on the crew manifest. Mister XO and Misses CO. Before Luke had any chance to stand at attention the stunning woman who was his CO told everybody to be at ease and apparently she wanted out of her dress uniform.

Luke wondered if he could assist with that. Then quickly banned these thoughts out of his head. Be professional. Cool. Suave. He was in no position to enjoy thoughts like these.

Alright, Luke had to admit it now, perhaps he maybe did have a weakness for women in power...

She looked over the assembled bridge crew and said, "Come on now, ladies and gentlemen. Let's not be shy. Let's have introductions. Who will be first?"

Luke stood up. "Allow me, Ma'am," Luke smiled a toothy smile. "Ensign Luke Osswell, a votre service."
