"Um, well, I spent a good part of the day exploring, and found most of the main departments, everywhere I wasn't getting in others' way, that is. Unless you know of some secret places I should know about..." She smiled slightly, which was about as much as she smiled lately. "Though, I wouldn't want to keep you from duty, whenever that starts, uh, Sir."

There was no warning, no blaring klaxon or hiss of decompression. Just the sudden and near deafening clanking, all the doors to Astrogation closed and locked shut. Vacuum/Danger/Decompression symbols began to glow on them, to warn against forced entry.

“What?” Phil’s mind was racing. Surely if there were a vacuum, that would imply a hull breach, but they hadn’t gone to red alert, which would normally be automatic for an event of that magnitude.

“What…” now suspicious, he headed for a nearby terminal, to check in with the bridge.

And then the music started.

“What!” Now that was just… wrong.

“I suspect this may be someone’s idea of a prank…” observed Phil. He raised his voice. “Ha ha, yes - jolly good fun. You can come out now…”

Varina looked around the room when the clanking began. The commander's comment echoed what she'd already been thinking.

She'd begun to get worried with the warnings that were blaring, but there also didn't seem to be the problems that were being advertised. However, when she realized what song was playing, she turned sharply to Commander Wilson. "What is going on?"

“I suspect this may be someone’s idea of a prank…” observed Phil. He raised his voice. “Ha ha, yes - jolly good fun. You can come out now…”

Everything was going swimmingly. Now that was a odd saying, because obviously if you were swimming you were playing the role of a land based mammel wrong. Keth couldn't imagine ever connecting 'swimming' with well. If Keth was going swimmingly, he prayed there would be a rescue plan in the works.

And towels, lots of towels.

He had set the tone with the music, the wide eyed stares of panic from the female were a clear indication that Phil was working what every voodoo that humans do. Now he just needed to add a little something extra. Something to really set things off on the right track.

He took his pencil nubs and tapped rapidly.

+++

Red alert lights began to blink on and off in the astrometric a lab. There was no blaring siren to accompany them, only the crooning of Barry White, which serenaded a room drenched in gently strobing red light.

"I should be recording this." Keth's voice buzzed thoughtfully from the intercom.

Meanwhile, on the bridge, Cindy was checking all of the systems when an unusual beep alerted her to an anomaly in Astrogation. She headed over to the science station and opened up more panels and said, "That's really odd. Decompression? In Astrogation? How there and not anywhere else?" she wondered aloud.

She called to Engineering, "Nav, check Astrogation. I think we have a malfunction. The computers are saying that it is decompressing but no other sensors confirm a vacuum."'

"Tallahassee!" Her eyes rolled and she stuck her head out of the Jeffrey's Tube that had her suspended from the ceiling. Arching an eyebrow she sighed deeply and muttered under her breath some untranslatable phrase that she'd heard her father say in a similar situation. If working on an ancient vehicle in full earth gravity with cruder tools might be considered similar. But it was Frankie, and she was doing her damnedest to get the place ship shape before they headed out of space dock.

She called to Engineering, "Nav, check Astrogation. I think we have a malfunction. The computers are saying that it is decompressing but no other sensors confirm a vacuum."'

Nav held her breath, counted to 10 and nodded once before pulling herself up and out. Astrogation? Had she heard correctly? They weren't even... "Aye, Captain," she said into her communicator and hopped down onto the deck. Turning back and facing her team, she gave them all a look. "What are you waiting for? We're under the gun and we need to get all of the repairs and upgrades finished in less than 18 hours." She quirked an eyebrow and nodded once. "Tallahassee... don't let me down."

"No ma'am," came the response, partially muffled as he crawled in to take her place.

Standing at the monitor in Engineering, she cycled through the readings and her eyes narrowed. "Hmmm..."

Flicking through the internal monitors she stopped suddenly as a sound caught her attention. It wasn't a regular sound from the ship. Not the hum of idling engines, or the electrical conduits that most people's minds had tuned out... not even the nearly inaudible discharge of the capacitors in the corridors that constantly kept a flow of electrons through the lighting panels in the ceiling and walls.. It was...

Music. Music? And there had been.... "Captain, it appears that there has been a Security Override activated for Astrogation." The decompression alert would have sealed the doors. She blinked a little as she could almost make out a person silhouetted by the lights that had begun strobing... in time with the music. Adjusting the resolution to compensate for the lighting, she could plainly see that there were two people. The Commander and some other... woman. Curiouser and curiouser.

"Confirming that there is no decompression, Captain, but I am looking at some aural and visual... anomalies." What the hell else was she supposed to call it? She almost expected some sort of mist to begin rising from the floor as well, but that might have been a deadly choice for the occupants in the room. And it didn't appear that they could transmit to Astrogation... at least, not yet. The comm line was still active.

"Did you want me to go and take a look?"

Tight deadlines, final adjustments, sign offs, confirmations, diagnostics... it was doable, just really damned close. What tactical reason would anyone have to isolate two people in the... with the....

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh...

And the Commander?

Well, now.

Great... Varina thought. Even if the light was only mildly annoying at the moment, it would soon become migraine-inducing if it didn't stop. "So, all the warnings are going off, but nothing is actually happening?" She looked around, figuring the obvious was worth a try. "Computer, quit it with the lights and locked doors. Let us out."
