Thanks to Luke’s quick reflexes disaster was averted and the shuttle with its 3 occupants (of which one was the Caitian ambassador to Earth) returned safely to the ship. Promoted to Lt. Jr. Gr.

CHARACTER HISTORY:
At first glance there is really nothing out of the ordinary with Luke Osswell. Loved by his parents. Sometimes a nuisance to his siblings. Used to be loner in school. Never had many friends. Always loved to read. Shy. Only after high school did he become more of a social person.
Before beginning his studies he spent half a year in South China as a teacher, it was in this period that he participated in the fabled Delhi – Lhasa speeder tournament, where his navigational skills and quick reflexes gave a glimpse of the excellent pilot he would become. After his return and start of his studies at Leiden University, he found that student life appealed to him. Loved to learn stuff. Discovered he enjoyed meeting people. Joined a student society and developed an interest in Asia, especially in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago. He spent a semester studying in Yogyakarta where he befriended the oldest daughter of Hamengkubuwono XXIV, the Yogyakarta Sultan. After his return and graduation from Leiden University, he was asked to join the Starfleet Academy Exchange Program between Vulcan and Earth students in 2256. He was lucky to have gotten the chance when he did, because a year later the Planet Vulcan was destroyed by the Romulan Nero. His group of exchange students are among the last Earth students to have set foot on Vulcan. The group that went after him all perished in the disaster, including most of the Vulcan friends Luke had made the year before.
Initially Luke had applied for the Interplanetary and Cross-species Dialogue track, but was not selected in the program. Instead he opted for Starfleet Academy Flight School and started training to become a helmsman. His interests in other cultures and diplomacy remained, though, and keeps himself updated on the latest interplanetary developments and issues.
The news of the destruction of Vulcan, the loss of his Vulcan friends and fellow cadets struck him hard. However, instead of making him angry, he became more convinced of the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in order to prevent disasters like this.
In 2260 he graduated from Starfleet Academy and was assigned as a secondary Helmsman to the USS Roddenberry. He performed his duties well. It was during an away mission with the Caitian ambassador to Earth that the shuttle experienced difficulties and it was thanks to Luke’s instincts and piloting skills disaster was averted. The Caitlian ambassador, a feline, fell in love with him as a result, and the two of them had a short but intimate love affair until it was discovered a few months later. Having broken the Starfleet and Caitian regulations, the Caitian ambassador was recalled to her homeworld. Luke, having been recently promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, was transferred over to the USS Legacy and demoted back Ensign.
