LANGUAGE: English and a smattering of Klingon
EDUCATION: Baccalaureate and appropriate qualifications from The Academy.

LIKES: Everybody. Away missions.
DISLIKES: Pain. Excessive meds.
FAMILY: Extensive family who will grieve deeply at his passing, making trips to the ship for the
purpose of memorializing the dear departed at inconvenient times and whose very
existence reminds the Captain of her duty and responsibility to the crew and her failure in
this particular instance.
LIMITATIONS: Unnaturally short lifespan. Relative anonymity at odds with the disproportionate amount
of grief his passing causes to the crew.
STRENGTHS: Useful hostage. First character to make everyone aware that an apparently benign planet
has hostile elements (‘the canary in the cage’). Revels in the afterlife. Can hang around in
spirit as long as needed. Familiar with all forms of death rites from orthodox Judaism to
shamanistic rituals to astral projection. Great natural shield. Not afraid to die for a poor
cause.

QUIRKS: Totally loveable. Everybody loves him. He never hurt a fly.
Charming lack of prescience. He rarely sees it coming.

CHARACTER HISTORY: Ensign was always a “promising student” who never gets to realize his
potential. Hence, his loss is always disproportionately great to the crew, even
though no-one ever hears his name until after his death when we inevitably
discover that the Captain promised his parents that she would “…take good
care of him”.

His precociousness was obvious from an early age. In kindergarten, he wrote his
first childish essay “Schroedinger’s Cat is neither ‘on’, nor ‘off’ the Mat”. In
Middle school, he distinguished himself with the theological essay, “Given the
Choice, I Prefer to Eat My Lunch in the Shade of Plato’s Cave”

At The Academy he received a commendation for his syncretic
chemistry/physics paper “The Paradox of Resublimated Thiotimoline, Time
Travel and Warp Drive: Why Asimov was Nearly Right… or, The Pot of Gold at the
End of the Tachion Trail”.

A person of considerable promise and potential, an eminently sympathetic character, totally innocent, eager and harmless who always gets to Rest in Pieces.
