This might sound odd, but the Huanni have a very simple emotional mind set: on or off. They feel in binary, as one observer started before allowing their membership into the Federation.

MEDICAL PROFILE: Standard psychological profiling does not work well on the Huanni psyche. Their emotional wellbeing is as much a chemical reaction as it is a mental condition, given the fact of their planets somewhat late blooming evolutionary jump to bipedal tool users in the last 10 thousand years or so. The Huanni might be able to wax poetically about the finer points of warp drive and Trans warp theory, but pinch one of them in the arm and you’re just as like to get a sobbing cry baby as you are a blood thirsty berserker. And both states can be equally dangerous.

CHARACTER HISTORY:

The Huanni, as a species, are an oddity in the universe. It is an often spouted fact that for a species to attain interstellar flight they must first gain the ability to harness the power of the atom. The high energy physics involved are a needed part of a tree of technology that leads to the stars, but it is a branch of that tree that can lead to greatness or to utter devastation. Many a world in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants lie uninhabited, radioactive wastelands where only microbe’s and mosses can grow, because a species used a great power to end themselves on purpose or by ignorance.The Huanni, on the other hand, avoid that sand trap: and the reason why this is surprising will soon become apparent.

The Huanni are a relatively young species, even when compared to humans. Only two hundred years before the Huan people had thought their world as flat as a coin and resting at the exact centre of the universe. Of course now that is just a side lined religion, but it was one that nearly all of the species subscribed to. Ten thousand years previously, the time it took humanities progenitors to go from flint spear tips to phaser rifles, the Huanni were arboreal tree dwellers who subsided on hunting and very little farming. It has been supposed that the Huanni have only been bipedal tool users for a relatively short period of time.

Given this state of youthful potential in a species, there is still a tremendous amount of the Huan genetic code that harkens backs to their hunter ancestors. They still possess fearsome claws, have terrific night and day light vision, a sense of small that has been remarked as unfortunately accurate, to name but a few. Their major disadvantage comes from this same link to their past: their minds might be free to reason, but their bodies are still l controlled more or less by a flight or fight response.

Keth Soban, during his time training with Starfleet, has had numerous records of minor incidents that accelerated into major altercations. The Huanni’s under developed hormone control system, coupled with a general and species wide trusting nature, has helped Keth be led into many a bad situation. When Keth was off campus and exploring the San Francisco Bay area, a store he was in was robbed. When the thief made his exit he was heard, whilst passing Keth, saying “Don’t let the cops catch me! Don’t let the cops catch me!” The cops did not catch him, for as the stores security guard raced out after him, Keth took a hold of the man’s left shoulder and successfully dislocated it with one hand. The Huanni are very, very strong.

And so Keth’s spotted record saw him assigned to non-important ships and outpost, mostly staying within the Sol System for most of his career. Only a terrible disaster and a lack of true options would see the feline medical officer with the pendulum like emotions get his chance at greatness.

Surviving that chance, however, is the mission of his crewmates.
